CAMERA
All photography presented on this web site has been performed using a Bronica SQ-Ai 6x6 medium format
camera. This professional camera system produces incredibly crisp 2.25" by 2.25" negatives and
transparencies that can be easily enlarged to 16" by 16" or 20" by 20" size with little to no visible grain. This is
an excellent camera for producing medium-sized prints for wall display, the focus of my work. My system
includes five lenses, specifically the 50, 80, 110 Macro, 150 and 250 mm lenses. Only UV filters are used.
FILM
Black & white photography was shot using Kodak Professional T-Max 100, an excellent (though finicky)
extra-fine grained film with interesting tonal characteristics. Color photography was shot using Fuji Velvia 50
transparency film, an excellent film noted for it's remarkable clarity, extra-fine grain, and bold color saturation.
PRINTING
Black & white photos are printed by the artist in a darkroom using traditional techniques, to museum-quality
archival standards. The photos are printed on Ilford Multigrade Warmtone Fiber paper, toned with Berg
Selenium for effect and greater print stability in more oxidizing environments. Color photos are printed using
a digital technique. The film transparencies are scanned and optically printed on Fuji Crystal Archive or
Kodak Endura Metallic paper by Denver's Reed Photo Imaging. With proper care, these images will last for
many decades of enjoyment and investment.
Photographs presented for sale on this site have not been digitally manipulated to create a digital
composition that bears little resemblance to the source. Instead, the photographs on this site accurately
record a piece of the world as I saw it at that place and time. The dodging and burning often performed on
black & white images has been done to reproduce the image as I saw it in the field, minimizing the
limitations of film in reproducing human sight. Color prints have been produced from archival-quality scans
of the original Fuji transparency. Color matching (to the original transparency) has been performed on the
scanned color images as well as, on occasion, selective dodging and burning. This has also been done to
better reproduce the image as I saw it in the field, again minimizing the limitations of the film in reproducing
human sight.
The photos on this web page have much less image detail than the actual photographic prints. For example,
the photos on the state gallery pages have image sizes of about 0.3 megapixels and the photograph home
pages have an image size of about 1 megapixels. In contrast, the actual photographic prints have image
sizes of roughly 60 megapixel equivalent. There is an amazing amount of detail in these physical prints!
MOUNTING, MATTING, SIGNING AND FRAMING
Mounting of the photographic prints is typically performed using dry mount techniques using archival-quality,
alkaline-buffered, paper-core, acid-free removable dry mount sheets. Mounting is on 100% cotton rag,
non-acidic, buffered, archival foam board. If you desire another mounting method, please contact me and I
will be happy to accommodate you.
Matting is performed using the highest quality Westminster buffered, museum quality, 100% rag board mat.
To enhance the transition from photo to frame, the images are always double matted. Mats are mounted
using dry mount techniques. The 16"x16" B&W photo size (24"x24" mat size) is triple V-Grooved for an
elegant effect. Matting is usually accomplished using either white or bright white mat board, whichever best
fits the print tone or color. Color images are typically matted using an elegant DuoTone white and black mat
that provides a truly stylin' effect! If you have any questions, please contact me.
All framing is accomplished using beautiful anodized aluminum frames and 98% UV filtering clear acrylic
protection. The framed pieces arrive ready to hang!
